We go, we go

The Market got burnt. I am staying with arson because those who should know, albeit having said it in the throes of grief, maintain that someone burnt down their lives. Listening to P. K. Bbosa in the evening while he hosted some traders, it came out that the Minister Matiya Kasaija and his counterpart Disaster Preparedness State Minister Musa Echeru had happened upon what should have been immediately bagged as critical evidence: a kavera and a little can that had previously obviously held petrol. That the Police did not take these items is really worrying.

The fire trucks could not get to the epicenter because the routes in the market are just too narrow, the officials have said. The fire, which started at 5 am when the rush hour was still hours away, burnt down stalls and decimated cash and destroyed dreams. Shouldn’t this be the time to really make good on all those promises for urban development? Remember how those of us who supported Ps. Ssematimba were silenced because Seya promised Kampala satellite cities all around the capital?

This and all the fires that happened in 2008 is surely the trigger, isn’t it? It has been said here and on other blogs that Uganda needs to get off its ass and demand for change. The people at the top are taking everyone for granted because they know that peeps be too scared to raise their voice. This shit’s gotta stop. Civil disobedience is way overdue, I tell you.

This morning, I got off the taxi and was hit by an apparition; the most beautiful girl I have seen in a long time, of course excepting my wife. I found myself turning for the second glance. And that’s really something because I have made a pact with myself never to give in to that second glance. Clearly there was a problem here. So I did what I do best in those circumstances; I started listing all the things that could make her undesirable. She could have 7 toes on each foot; she could have no teeth; she could be a ninety-year-old hag let loose by evil plastic surgeons. This here chick could be that bride in the ad whose groom abandoned in the salon because of bad breath.

Three shouts for the Prez

You’ve heard. The president of the Maldives is selling his yacht and even planning to turn the presidential palace into a university.

This guy has obviously not taken any lessons from AbrahamsA Wreath for Udomo. I mean, the way to do it is to fight the system till it falls and then take over all the trappings and live an even grander life, right?

The new president Mohamed Nasheed was a prisoner of conscience under the dictatorship of Abdul Gayoom, who ruled the Maldives for 30 years. After being released and winning in a landslide, it is now surprising that he is shunning all signs of ostentation and living a seemingly Spartan life.

The GFC (according to Degstar on phone last night) or rather, as I came to learn it’s being called these days, the global financial crisis is forcing the Indian Ocean islands to cut back on their expenditure. Known as one of the top spots in the world where the rich and spoilt go to spend obscene amounts for a few days, the Maldives government realises that tourism, which is the backbone of the economy, may not support the country for much longer.

All that is noble and cool but what really got me was the reports that the president is considering buying land from other countries, notably, Australia because there are fears that the Maldives are sinking. There must be land to which to shift the population should that event come to pass.

The movies and Karamoja

Yeah, yeah. So Slumdog won afterall. Big deal. I was one of those who was rooting for it, thinking it would really show the man after all these years of the Academy awarding the bad movies of the year, passing them off as the best. I mean, there’s somehthing really magical about coming from nowhere and winning everything there is to win, right?

Haven’t watched it yet but a very reliable friend has it at home and he’s said all the noises that have been made about it are appropriate.

But after the Oscars, I find myself in all too familiar territory. I don’t think I want to watch it anymore. Either I am disturbed or I am coming down with another case of depression.

I have watched some intersting flicks lately though. I rewatched Pretty Woman and It’s remarkable how good that picture still is all these years later. I watched Gere in that one and then watched him in The Hunting Party (by the way, I just did not think that reference to Uganda as the heart of darkest Africa was funny) and I realise he is a real legend.

In other news, what’s so bad about posting Janet Museveni to Karamoja?

Seems I have been away for far too long. Tried to post something intelligent complete with links to Machaiavelli’s The Prince and SunTzu’s Art of War and even added pictures. What does this here thingy do after all that trouble? Jammme and lost all the work. I am not even going to bother again today. Lemme just raed y’all.

Or maybe it was The Matrix.

News coming in from Najjanankumbi indicates that Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu has thrown down his gauntlet. If all goes according to plan, he’ll be president in 2011. I have been waiting for this for two years.
