Going home is, against all effort, memorable. Even with the fatigue and the overwhelming desire to close my eyes and be home, away from this madness, away from the noise and the pickpockets eyeing everything, I can’t help remembering traveling to Entebbe in the evening.
It is about hitching a ride and fighting the ever constant fear that one day, all those stories and movies about hitchers and what happens to them. Hitching a ride to cut reduce the cost of traveling home, the cost of being in the rat race.
Riding in some airport Transporter’s car means listening to Judy Boucher and Michael Learns to Rock. In another setting, another life, you would probably scoff and say, “how could I be caught dead listening to that?” but this is a different plane. This is not a kamunye where you can shout at the driver to “tuteereko CBS awo ku Kkiriza oba Gaana” (Switch to CBS so we can listen to that over rated but sectarian programme).
And you have to give it to that Vincentian, her brand of reggae was really mellow. The kind of stuff that throws you back to the days when KPC was still called The Centre and Buganda Road was Norman Gordinho.
Also, watching the new James Bond, I cant help feeling cut up. I am pinning for Pierce Brosnan. Even Sean Connery. Heck, James Bond is not supposed to be gloomy and all-serious. Daniel Craig just makes the whole thing that more serious. James Bond is not meant to be serious. It is about the guy taken by gadgets and girls and Martinis.
The world is in trouble and getting to watch a hero who is will always win, mischievous smile on his face gets us a rest from reality. When you try to get into North Korea and WMDs and whatever Quantum of Solace has, you force us to wake up and look around and realize that this is just a movie and it does not hold the answers we are looking for. All this could have been avoided had they got an actor with a play boy smile.
And…The guy who acted in the best film ever made, Tim Robbins has finally been given a star on Hollywood Boulevard.
